The science behind solar panel technology?

When solar radiation or solar energy enters the earth's atmosphere, it does so as a short wave. When these short waves hit something like a person, building or solar panel, then the wave converts to long wave. The process expels a small amount of energy and this energy produces heat or electiricity depending on the panel type.

There are 2 types of solar panels, which is best?

Yes indeed, both do very different jobs using energy emitted from the sun.

1. Solar heating panels
2. PV electric solar panels.

Which you choose is up to you, but it basically depends on which type of energy cost you want to reduce and how much you can afford to spend on a solar project.

People now see solar panels as an investment into the home.

Solar heating panels

Domestic and commercial solar heating systems gather energy radiated by the sun and convert it into useful heat in the form of hot water. Systems have been available in the UK since the 1970's. Solar water heating systems typically work alongside a conventional water heater to provide hot water.

PV electric solar panels

Domestic and commercial photovoltaic solar panels are commonly known as pv solar panels, use photo cells to convert solar radiation into electricity. The PV cell consists of one or two layers of a semi conducting material, usually silicon. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field across the layers, causing electricity to flow. The greater the intensity of the light, the greater the flow of electricity.

Evacuated solar tubes

Domestic and commercial evacuated tubes also commonly known as solar tubes, are the most efficient solar heating panels technologies for the UK climate. These domestic systems for heating water, work all year round contributing up to 65% of your homes hot water needs, with the solar energy that hits your homes roof everyday.

FAQ's about domestic solar panels

What is a solar panel?

A technology for generating green clean electricity or heat usually installed on the roof, stimulated by strong financial incentives from the government. The system will be installed by accredited MCS solar installers.

What are the financial benefits of solar panels?

Solar panels are now financially attractive to home owners that have a southerly facing roof, and can give 100% green electricity for your own use, a reduced carbon footprint and a drive to improve the energy efficiency in your home. Now solar panels are considered an investment that increases the value of your house with a long lifespan requiring very little maintenance.

How attractive is solar energy?

This depends on location (Cornwall and Devon are great), the roof orientation (south, south east, south west is best) but east and west combined installations are available too. Solar grants have been replaced with feed in tariffs for pioneering homes who install solar panels.

The feed in tariff is a government back incentive giving you 41.3 pence per Kwh generated using solar panels using solar energy from the sun. You will be paid this for 25 years making solar a very attractive investment into your home and energy future.

How much electricity will my system generate?

On average, a small 1 kW sized system will generate around 800 - 1200 kWh per year on a southerly facing roof. Domestic solar systems range from 1 kW to 5kW sized systems with a maximum output averaging 4300 kWh per year.

What will the solar system cost?

PV solar panel system costs are broken down into the of panels (50%), the inverter (10%) and the installation (40%) which includes both labour costs (it takes one or two days to install) including materials such as the mounting system and cabling.

Prices vary depending on quality of materials and the installation costs. On average installation prices of around 4.500 pounds per kWh are normal, with discounts for larger systems too.

What about financial return?

The governments feed in tariff incentives can give yearly returns of over 10% on the initial investment cost. This means you will have paid back your system within 10-12 years, and can enjoy another 15-12 years of government subsidy and free energy too. Many people decide to install solar panels for financial reasons, as it returns more than ISAs and bonds. Solar panels are now considered a good investment because their returns are inflation adjusted and tax-free.

How do I choose a good solar installer?

Our solar installers are MCS accredited and REA (Renewable Energy Association) members, guaranteeing you a quality technology and installation service.
