PV electric - Solar panels installations

Why, we're passionate about PV solar electric panels?

Investing in your home and your energy future with on-grid tied PV solar panels with a average life span of 30-40 years. Solar panels have never made such financial sense in a world of endless oil price hikes.

Learn about PV solar panels

Photovoltaic Solar Electric Panels Installation

In a nutshell, pv solar panels produce electricity from daylight through a process called photovoltaic streaming. "Photo" refers to light and "voltaic" to electricity. Photons are converted to electrons and streamed into your power supply, and any surplus energy produced can be sold.

PV solar panels made easy

Photons from the sun can penetrate clouds allowing you to generate even on overcast days.

Photovoltaic (PV) panels can be mounted on a roof or ground mounted. Ideally the roof will be south facing or close to at an position of 30 degrees with the horizontal for optimum performance.

The panels produce a DC current which an inverter fitted in the loft space changes the DC into AC. A wall mounted display unit will allow you to check on performance and usage of your system.

No planning permission needed in most cases.

How these supersede other solar panels?

  • Can reduce your electricity bills by up to 100%, depending on your energy. consumption rate and size of system purchased.
  • Sell power to the National Grid at better rates than your bank, even if you use it yourself.
  • No maintenance, with a long functional lifetime of 30+ years. PV solar installed in the 1960's is still working.
  • Silent in operation and contributes all year round.

Feed-in tariffs

The amount received from the feed-in tariff depends on what size you get. The idea behind the feed-in tariffs is to encourage people to act now. By acting now, you will see the best financial return on your solar installation.

PV solar panels and the feed-in tariff give investors an average of 8-12% return on investment.

The feed-in tariff will be paid for 25 years. These tariffs will cover the initial cost and earn a return of around 11%.

Payments made on systems up to 5 KW and paid 21p per kw h produced even if you use the energy yourself which is guaranteed 20 years.

The proven life span for this technology is 30-40 years with panels installed in the 1960's still working.

Common questions about installation

The basics

Solar panels are no longer viewed just as a green product. Most people installing solar panels today, do so to reduce dependence on expensive fossil fuels, or as an investment opportunity which will receive and save more money than keeping the money in the bank.

Why people install solar panels >>

Are pv solar panels suitable for my home?

Most homes are suitable, if you have a S/SE/SW facing roof space, then probably. Your internal electrical set up will need to be checked for compatibility, and this can be done through our free home survey and "get a quote" service.

Check your homes orientation >>

How can solar panels work in the UK?

The UK receives 60% of the solar radiation compared with the equator. Each square metre of the UK receives between 900 to 1,300 kw h annually of solar radiation each year.

How much roof space do I need?

The system does take a lot of roof space, but (photovoltaic) pv solar can be installed within your garden area using A-frames, facing south, if roof space is a problem.

How much will PV generate?

A PV system would generate approximately 750 kw h/year per kW installed. So our basic 1 kW system would generate around 750 kw h per year, and a 5kW system will produce around 4500 kw h. Installing PV solar is a terrific way of future proofing proofing' your home.

What can I earn?

This varies depending on your location and local climate variations and roof orientation. For this reason, we offer a free property inspection and quotation. Once we have the correct information, we will be able to sit down with you (tea optional) and give you more accurate facts and figures based on your individual location.

What about payback?

"People who install PV solar panels acknowledge energy prices will rise continually over 5, 10, 15 even 30 years from now. People inverting today will benefit from cheaper installation and product cost."

Why apply sooner rather than later

The Clean Energy Cash Back Scheme was designed to encourage early take up of PV solar technology, which is similar to Germany's pioneering scheme. Early adopters of solar panels will get a much better feed-in tariff rates than later adopters, eventually finishing altogether once demand has been achieved.

How much will my PV solar system cost?

The cost of a solar electric system depends on several factors but is usually based on system sizes. A home-survey and consultation appointment can be arranged through our "get a quote" service.

Do you offer 'free' solar panels?

No, and we don't recommend them for the following reasons:

Firstly companies who do offer free solar panels are cashing in and taking away your entitlement to the feed-in tariff reward. There is allot of money to be made, and they are taking that benefit away from you. Secondly, if you work during the day, then the energy savings they promise will be small. Thirdly, you will find it hard to sell your home in the future if another company contractually owns your roof for a minimum of 25 years.

Invest yourself and receive the feed-in tariffs benefits yourself, is our advice.

Will it supply all my electricity?

The average household consumption is 3000 kw h per year. Thus on average, our smallest 1kW system could supply nearly 25% of your electricity over the course of the year, depending on your consumption rates and it may be possible to do more, by carefully reducing your energy use.

What does 'grid connected' mean?

The generated electricity, which will obviously vary according to the level of sunlight, means the excess energy produced will be directed out to the National Grid, and you will be credited accordingly.

In this way, the deficit between generation and demand can simply be purchased from your electricity supplier as normal.

Is my home suitable for Photovoltaic's?

Photovoltaic (PV) panels can be configured to fit. If roof space is an issue, another option is to ground mounted them on a frame within your garden.

The modern PV array technology and mounting systems mean that PV can be retro fitted on existing roofs or easily incorporated into new builds.

Do I need planning permission?

No planning permission is needed, unless you live in a listed building or conservation area.

What maintenance is required?

The advantages of PV solar panels over other micro generation technologies are that no maintenance is required because it is a solid state energy conversion process.

The 3 types of PV solar cells, but which is best?

Mono crystalline PV solar cells are considered the most efficient solar panel by industry experts.

Mono cells are made from a single large crystal of silicon (mono = one). Poly panels are made from melted together multiple crystals (poly = many). The poly ones are marginally less efficient because of the boundaries between crystals in each cell wafer compared to the mono cells. So for the same power output a mono panel is slightly smaller in size. Mono panels are, therefore, the best for small roofs or where there is a problem with shadows that limits the useful area of the roof.

New to the market is hybrid crystalline and amorphous thin film types (such as the Sanyo Hit types). These make use of mono cells, but with either an overcoat of thin film amorphous cells (light can pass through the thin film to the mono/poly cell below) or in the dead space around the mono cells.

Thin film amorphous cells are much less efficient than mono or poly cells in strong sunlight, but they are better than them in cloudy conditions.

I heard PV solar panels are expensive?

With generous, solar grants available, the increase in your house price after installation and freedom from energy prices, investment in such a system has now become a real choice for homes across the UK.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

This rather depends on the solar panel technology installed and the density of the cloud. In moderate cloud density, solar energy can still be used. With very, heavy dark, dense cloud cover, probably not. Use your solar powered calculator out on a cloudy day and it will still work.

Can I sell my surplus energy?

Yes, feed-in tariffs (Clean Energy Cash back Scheme) will be credited to you. The system is time sensitive designed to reward the earlier takers with bigger feed-in tariff rewards.

Will installation have a large impact on my home?

Once the solar panels are installed on the roof, the internal components do not take up much space inside. Installations usually can be done within 3-4 days, with installers being polite, clean and tidy.

What size solar panel system will I need?

This depends on your energy consumption rate. You can find this out by looking at your electricity bill and finding your annual KW consumption.

Do I need planning permission?

Only if you live within a conservation area, or in a listed building. It is worth contacting your local council beforehand.

Can I install solar myself?

In most cases no, however, if you have Part P electrical and plumbing skills, then it may be possible to install in a diy capacity. DIY solar water heating panels and evacuated tubes self-install kits are available.

DIY pv solar panels kits >>

DIY installing can work out much cheaper. However, you will not be eligible for the generous feed-in tariffs schemes currently available. All eligible solar installations must be carried out and certified by an accredited MCS solar installer.

How long does a PV solar system last?

PV solar panels installed in the 1960's is still working.

Commercial & business

Solar electric panels and solar panels in general are becoming an necessity for small and large business's alike. If you use hot water during your daily operations, then including solar into your business plan can reward you with lower running costs in an expensive world of energy.

We had solar panels installed

"Seeing the electricity boards meter running BACWARDS, totting up exactly what I am selling back to the grid, is one of the most satisfying sights I have seen in a long while."
Mr Jones, Worcester

"Our 3kW pv solar system that you supplied and fitted has been running for a few weeks. We are so pleased with the whole process and the quality of the installation that we felt compelled to write to you.

Right from the time that your representatives visited our bungalow to explain what you could offer our needs, right through to the installation process was smooth and easy.

We were kept informed at all stages of the short process, and we were even able to have the system fitted, at a time to suit our holiday plans.

We have had a number of people ask us about the system, and all have been impressed.

We are proud to be able to say that we are helping in a small way, to save the planet. Thank you for a job well done."
Mr and Mrs Jeam, Bristol
