The feed-in tariff, also known as the Fit scheme, has been available in the UK on April 1 2010 and is the electricity sector of the Clean Energy Cash Back Scheme which is a Government led plan to pay people who create their own electricity using green technologies such as photovoltaic.
The feed-in tariffs guarantee a minimum payment for the electric generated by your system, as well as payments for unused electricity exported to the grid, known as the export tariff. These payments will boost household savings, as bills will be reduced by using electricity generated on site and not importing power as most people do now.
The tariff is available to everyone including households, landlords, businesses and even communities and organisations like schools and village halls.
The money you receive depends on the size of the system you install. The exciting news is that the largest payments come with solar photovoltaic technology with as much as 21p per Kilowatt hour produced.
These tariffs should cover the initial cost of the installation of technology with a return of 8%. You should earn back the capital costs of your installation two or three times over the duration of the tariff scheme, in addition to reducing your energy, bills, solar PV tariffs are paid for 25 years, while most of the remaining technologies such as heat pumps will only benefit from 20 years of payments.
To apply for the feed-in tariff payments you must have the technology installed after 1 April 2010 by MCS accredited solar installers.
