Wait because PV solar panels will increase efficiency

Photovoltaic solar has been in commercial use since the 1950's. The panels we use today have been in development since this time and the maximum efficiency rate they can achieve is 15 -16%. This is the sunlight hitting the surface being converted to usable power.

There is a solar cell under development at the moment commonly known as thin film solar, but at best this cell can only achieve 11 percent efficiency, but I suspect the way the world is going, traditional pv solar cells will come down in price through economies of scale, before the new solar cell can be developed to a higher efficiency.

It is early days, but our solar system has been in operation for only a week, but we are already excited by the prospect of generating electricity. When I tell friends that we are now classified as a green power station they blink and look in amazement.

A friend who had spotted our installation greeted me in the supermarket with the words “you must be disappointed the sun is not shining today”. I assured her that it was still producing, and she left amazed.

We already have experience of a solar system to heat water so why not, we thought, have a solar system to generate electricity. When the sums were done they indicated an excellent, tax free return on our capital, the system fitted neatly on our south roof.

It has significantly reduced our co2 footprint and enhanced the look of our old house. There does not seem to be any negatives, so we went ahead and had the 16 panels system installed.
